In a team sport, it's easy to assuage your ego by telling yourself you could have won if you only had better teammates. If you lose a race, you lost it all by yourself. Despite how common races are, winning one is extraordinarily rare, and losing is a near-certainly for all except a blessed few. I believe this is why self-deprecation is so common among competitive runners.
